Fire Safety Tips
Install
smoke alarms of every level of your home, inside bedrooms and
outside sleeping areas.
- Test your smoke alarm monthly and change the batteries as
required or at least once a year.
- Never disable a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector. Smoke
alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
- Create a fire escape plan and practice it with your family.
Ensure that everyone knows their role in the plan and knows what to
do in the event of a fire.
- Teach Children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do
when they hear one.
- Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed outside of sleeping
areas and on every level of the home.
- Have fireplaces and other heating devices inspected by a
qualified professional each year.
- Never use water to extinguish a grease fire, use a tight
fitting lid or cookie sheet to smother the fire, install a fire
extinguisher rated for the kitchen near the cook stove or
oven.
- Do not store flammable liquids near heat sources such as water
heaters or furnaces.
- Keep three feet of clearance between heating equipment and
combustible materials.
- Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning device inside a home, due to the fact that these devices produce deadly carbon monoxide gas. (Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels burn in completely. In the home heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide.)
